Workshops

Software installation on Linux
March 11, 13, 18, 20 2019

Through this workshop, we would like to achieve two goals. 1) You will learn how to install software on a Linux computer; 2) By understaning the basic architecture of a Linux software,  you would know how to troubleshoot if a software does not run.

The workshop has two sesssions.

Part 1. Basic Architecture of a Linux software and how to install software in Conda. Install, update and delete software in Conda is very easy, and does not require root privilege. There are more than 3000 bioinformatics software available in Conda.

Part 2. Installation of software without Conda. Most of the commonly used software should be available in Conda repository. But some software might not be in Conda yet, and might even require you to compile the source code by yourself.  In this session, we will cover software written in PYTHON, C, PERL, R and JAVA.

This workshop is divided into paired sessions: lecture/presentation session (Mondays) followed by hands-on session (Wednesdays), this arrangement will allow for plenty of time for hands-on training.

The machine allocations will be posted here.
